My life on the road: Evan Yurman

"A trip from New York down to New Orleans through the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Devil's Tail was one of the best I've ever done. There were about 15 of us, and we stopped off at Graceland, and some national barbecue extravaganza in Memphis, and we still did it in about four days. (There were speeding tickets.) We shot some guns, ate some waffles, tried fried chicken in three different states, and had a cup of sweet tea the size of a pitcher in Memphis. We pulled off into one place and saw a guy who had a sign saying 'The Best Fried Chicken Around—Ever.' He went to Juilliard and has a Ph.D. in African-American studies and owns a fried-chicken stand with some special pressure-fryer-cooker. At the end, we all flew home—we hated each other by the end of the trip, and didn't talk to each other for a few months. We're planning the next trip now."
